the parking attendant in the car park of a five star hotel is employed for a reason.
this person is employed to do a job.
He may or may not get enough money or salary from the job
but the job he does becomes his duty.
He or She is happy if you give him or her something to appreciate the care he took doing the job
this then becomes a gift in the line of duty.
if he is unhappy if you do not give him something, because of two reasons.
and he expects either thank you or "something"
in essence "he feels that he or she is not recognized for what he is doing"
but if what he expects is not just thank you but "something"
then this something becomes a bribe.
where do we go from here?
Always say thank you
do not offer anything in the line of duty [other than salary which is given by the employer]
even if you want to give "something", since you want to be nice, do not give anything
but always say thank you with eye contact with all the sincerity you want to show
hope this makes sense
best wishes
